Top-Ranked St. X Wins Annual Grudge Match Against Trinity

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

If defending Kentucky 6-A champ Trinity has any solace from Saturday night's 32-7 whipping by arch-rival St. Xavier, it's in the fact that the Shamrocks had the same thing happen last year in the regular season before hoisting the most important trophy at the end of the year. Last year St. X demolished Trinity 30-6 in the regular season.

In fact, even though St. X has won five of the last six regular season games, it's been Trinity that has turned it around and won the four playoffs match-ups between the two since 2003.

According to the Courier-Journal, this wasn't really a perfect game for either of Kentucky top 6-A schools. St. X is now 5-1 this year, which Trinity suffers it's first loss to a Kentucky school and is 2-4.

Highland Fans Love Their High School Football

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Highlands proved Friday night that it deserves to be in the national rankings. The two-time Kentucky 5-A champs moved into the USA Today Super 25 this week after beating St. Xavier (OH). Before the game, the Cincinnati Enquirer talked with one fan, who put into perspective, what the Bluejays mean to the Ft. Thomas community.

Showdown in Kentucky: St. Xavier/Trinity

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

It's not often that a 2-3 football team can be ranked #2 in the state, but that's the case with Trinity, which is getting ready for Friday night annual grudge match against cross-town rival St. Xavier, which is the top team in the Courier-Journal Litkenhous High School Football Rankings.

This isn't the oldest or longest rivalry in the country, but it definitely can be classified as one of the most passionate. Over 30,000-plus will show-up at Papa John's Stadium Friday night. The rivalry began in 1956 and coming into this year's game, St. X leads the series 32-31-2.

This decade has seen these two usually battle twice during the season...with the second game coming in the state championship game.

Below you'll find highlights from last year's regular season match-up. St. X won that game 30-6. However, Trinity turned the tables in the 2008 6-A title game with 34-28 overtime win that game the Shamrocks their 18th state high school football title.

Pleasure Ridge Park Coach Trial Begins in Death of Player

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

A lot of eyes are focused on Kentucky today as the trial begins for the coach charged with reckless homicide in the death of a Pleasure Ridge Park player in August 2008. David Jason Stinson is charged with reckless homicide in the death of 15-year old Max Gilpin, who collapsed during practice in 94-degree heat.

Support for Stinson is pretty strong with one man, Rodney Daugherty starting a website to raise money for Stinson's legal defense. Reportedly, Support Our Stinson has raised $90,000.

Sports Illustrated takes a look at the implications this trial will have on the sport of high school football.

Courier-Journal's 2009 Kentucky High School Football Preview

The Louisville Courier-Journal's 2009 Kentucky High School Football Preview is out. It's chock full of good stuff that everyone in the Bluegrass State needs on the eve of the season.

Trinity Looks to Rock & Roll Again in 2009

by Jeff Fisher
Kentucky High School Football Huddle

One of my favorite parts of covering high school football for 35-years are the coaches I gotten to meet. High school football coaches are a different breed...especially the good ones.

For the most part, they're in it for the kids, not the accolades that come with the position.

That's why I enjoyed the Courier-Journal's story on Trinity head coach Bob Beatty, who heads into the season looking to tie Kentucky's state record for consecutive championships. The Shamrocks have won four straight 6A titles and Beatty owns seven total in his nine seasons at the helm...not to mention an .885 winning percentage with a 116-15 record.

My favorite part of the article, the fact that Beatty knew at the age of 12 he wanted to be a head coach.

This year, Beatty is putting the championship streak into the hands of junior quarterback Brad Kragthorpe, son of University of Louisville head coach Steve Kragthorpe. According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, 6-1, 180-pounder should be another good one in the long-line of top Rock QBs.

Trinity opens the season August 28th at home against Lawrence North from Indiana.

Pre-Season Kentucky High School Football Rankings

by Jeff Fisher
Kentucky High School Football Huddle

The regular season begins Friday and Saturday, and while this is 2009 and not 2008, coaches around the Bluegrass State don't think that much has changed as all six defending state champs were football #1 in the Pre-Season Coaches' Poll according to the Lexington Herald-Leader and Kentucky.com.

The big question is...can the Trinity Shamrocks match Boyle County as the ONLY Kentucky team to ever win five straight high school football titles? Boyle County did it from 1999-2003.

Ft. Campbell Player Dies After Football Practice

by Jeff Fisher
Kentucky High School Football Huddle

It never is easy to write these stories, but it's important to keep focus on the seriousness of what can happen on football fields.

Ft. Campbell (KY) high school player Tim Williams passed away after practice on Wednesday. A report on WKRN says that Williams died after practice and doesn't appear to be heat related since temperatures were in the 70's with rain. Click here to read the story.

My condolences go out to Williams' family, teammates and his school.

Non-Contact Drills Begin in Kentucky

by Jeff Fisher
Kentucky High School Football Huddle

Full contact drills don't begin until August 1st, but coaches are able to get down to the business of coaching today in the Bluegrass State. However, not all teams will be on the practice field today for non-contact workouts.

State officials want to make sure that before heading out into the summer heat, all coaches have completed training to comply with the state's new rules on heat-related training that were implemented last year after the heat-related death of Max Gilpin of Pleasure Ridge Park.

Two week's ago, the National Athletic Trainers' Association recommended that high school football teams should eliminate two-a-day practices in the first week of August. Kentucky High School Athletic Association rules prohibit teams from holding two-a-day workouts on consecutive days.

Click here to read about the National Athletic Trainers' Association recommendations.

The regular season begins August 21st in Kentucky.
