<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Trinity,
which won its 10th state title in 12 years last season (video above),
looks again to be the top team in the state even though the Shamrocks
lost plenty of offense with the graduation of quarterback Travis Wright (Florida International) and his top reciever Kentucky Mr. Football James Quick (Louisville). In all, Trinity lost five D-1 starters to graduation.

Dual-threat QB Reggie Bonnafon, who's already given his verbal to Louisville
despite never starting a varsity game, takes over for Wright. Bonnafon,
who played wide receiver last year, was Trinity's JV starting QB during
his sophomore year. As a wide receiver last year, Bonnafon caught 37
balls for 509 yards and six TDs. As a QB, Bonnfon was 4-4 for 42 yards
and three touchdowns.

most public schools shying away from the privates during the regular
season, the private schools end-up playing among themselves. In some
cases, crossing the country to fill-out their schedules.

Defending Kentucky state champ Trinity
is an excellent example of a school that goes out-of-state on a regular
basis to play the best that they can find. Year-in and year-out, the
Shamrocks are one of the best in the Bluegrass State, entering 2013 with
three straight Class 6-A titles to go along with nine state titles in
the last 11 years. In all, Kentucky is tied for the most Kentucky state
football titles with 22.

Today,
Trinity officials announce that the Shamrocks will play four state
champs during the 2013 regular season. Trinity will open the regular
season on August 23rd against Tennessee's Enworth, which has won the last three Division II-AA titles. It's the first game of a home-and-home series between the two.

Last year, Enworth finished #12 in High School Football America National Top 25 Rankings, while Trinity was #13.

On Septmeber 6th, Trinity plays the first of two games against 2012 Indiana state champs when it will play Lawrence Central, which won the 2012 Class 5A championship. On September 27th, Trinity will host Indiana Class 4A champ Indianapolis Cathedral, which has won three straight state titles. On August 30th, Trinity will be on the road to take-on powerful Carmel, which has won seven Indiana state titles with the last coming in 2011.

The fourth 2012 state champ on Trinity's schedule is Archbishop Moeller
out of Cincinnati. Moeller, which won last year's Division 1 title,
will travel to Louisville for a November 1st game that will close-out
the Shamrocks' regular season schedule. Last year, Moeller beat Trinity
45-42 to snap the Shamrocks' 33-game win streak. Another Ohio
powerhouse on the Shamrocks' schedule is Colerain on September 13th.

One other out-of-state opponent is Marist High School from Illinois.

Trinity's in-state opponents include DuPont Manual, Louisville Male and arch-rival St. Xavier on October 4th. The St. X game annually draws 35,000 to 40,000 fans.

If you count Trinity's August 16th scrimmage against 2012 Kentucky 5-A champ Highlands, the Shamrocks will play a total of five defending state champs this year.

In a news release from the school, Trinity head coach Bob Beatty
remarked; “To be considered the best you must play the best. This is as
tough a schedule as anyone will play in the country. Our
student-athletes will learn lessons about hard work, teamwork,
discipline, winning and losing. These lessons are the reasons we have
sports as part of the total school mission.”

Athletic Director Dennis Lampley
stated “This schedule shows our confidence in the coaching staff and
student-athletes. I know that our fans will support the team throughout
the entire season, regardless the score at the end of a game. There are
big lessons we are teaching through sports. This schedule helps impart
those lessons.”

This season the Shamrocks will play on a new artificial surface that was installed at Marshall Field during the winter months.

Also
as part of today's news release, Trinity officials announced that
beginning in 2014 or 2015, the Shamrocks will begin a home-and-home
series against Nevada power Bishop Gorman.

The state's six championship games, known as the Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl, have been played in Bowling Green over the last two years, but there was a chance that the KHSAA would have to look for a new location without a title sponsor. The deal was finalized after Russell Athletic, a Bowling Green-based business, signed-on.

"Again, the corporate community in the Bowling Green area, along with the great folks at Western Kentucky University, have openly showed their appreciation and understanding of the value of the young people in the Commonwealth,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “It continues to amaze me the great community spirit and welcoming attitude that is displayed here in Bowling Green. As it relates to high school sports in this state, this move gives one of our marquee championships stability and allows for continued growth in the coming years.”

“Russell Athletic is excited to partner with the Kentucky High School Athletic Association as the title sponsor of the state football championships,” said Gary Barfield, Executive Vice President of Russell Brands, LLC. “With Russell being a part of Fruit of the Loom, Inc., this partnership allows us to tie in Kentucky high school athletics, Western Kentucky University and the city of Bowling Green to help create a memorable experience for Kentucky high school football for many years to come.”

Russell Athletic, whose official name is Russell Brands, LLC, is a Fruit of the Loom company with corporate offices located in Bowling Green. The company has been in existence for more than 100 years and is the leading supplier of team uniforms at the high school, college and professional level.

Last year nearly 48,000 fans attended the state title games.

Below are some highlights from yesterday's news conference announcing the partnership between the state, Russell Athletic and Western Kentucky University:
EST for the latest edition of the National High School Coaches Association Sports Hour.

My co-host Trish Hoffman and I will be talking high school football, boys basketball and wrestling.

Joining us at the top of the show will be 2010 High School Rudy Award winner Chance Anthony of Breckinridge County High School in Kentucky. Anthony was a two-way starter on this year's football team in spite of the fact that he was born without the lower part of his right arm.

Also on the show will be former NFL quarterback Gus Frerotte, who was just hired as the head football coach at John Burroughs School in St. Louis. Frerotte, who played with seven NFL teams, has been the school's quarterbacks' coach during the past two seasons.

Last year, John Burroughs finished runner-up in Missouri's Class 3.

Having a bad day?

We all have them.

I had one yesterday, but then I get a news release announcing the winner of the 2010 High School Rudy Award. Then after learning about Chance Anthony of Breckinridge High School in Hardinsburg, I got the feeling that feeling sorry for myself wasn't the thing I should be doing.

Anthony was born without the lower part of his right arm. That has not prevented the senior from being a contributing member of the school's football and basketball teams.

The two-way starter caught his first touchdown pass last season during the school's homecoming game. He can also bench press 235-pounds...basically with one arm!

“One hand or not, you can still catch a football and still catch a basketball,” said Anthony. “Sometimes my friends forget I’ve only got one hand. I do as much as anyone else at school. It’s how you deal with adversity that counts. If somebody gives you the opportunity, you better take it and run. Don’t look back and question why. I know I’m going to look back and really appreciate Coach giving me the opportunity to be the best I could be.”

Anthony, who won a $10,000 scholarship, was chosen for the 2nd annual award from 250 nominees.

The High School Football Rudy Award is named after Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who became a not-so-famous, famous player while at Notre Dame while only playing two downs as a 5-6, 165 pound walk-on.

Anthony will join me and my co-host Trish Hoffman Sunday night on the NHSCA Sports Hour radio show to talk about his award an incredible journey to overcome his handicap. Click here to listen LIVE to the Sunday night at 6 PM EST.

The first runner-up was Cody Rye of Ironwood, Michigan...2nd runner-ups were Kyle Wilcos of Seffner, Florida and Tray Waite of Warren, Ohio.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04042124175198815226noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22603692.post-149342017915760532010-12-03T20:23:00.000-08:002010-12-03T20:23:11.648-08:00Kentucky High School Football Scores - Playoffs/ChampionshipsKentucky High School Football Scores
